Ramon Gil-Casares, Ambassador of Spain to the United States
When Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy and U.S. President Barack Obama met in January 2014, they reflected on the close cooperation the countries have that has culminated in a 229 year partnership. Spain is committed to promoting economic growth and employment opportunities through bilateral trade with the U.S. and has supported efforts for a free trade treaty agreement between Central America and the EU, which became reality in 2012. Additionally, defense and security relations between the two countries are regulated by the Mutual Defense Assistance Agreement and the Agreement on Defense Cooperation which authorizes the U.S. to use certain facilities at Spanish military installations. In 2011, Spain allowed four U.S. ballistic missile defense-capable destroyers to be stationed at a base in southern Spain.
Join the discussion on the relationship between the two countries with Ambassador Gil-Casares at this International Education Week installment of the International Speaker Series.
